Captain Alex Vargas was born and raised in the City of Los Angeles and is the son of Mexican immigrants. Alex graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a degree in Social Science.

After graduating from college, Alex was employed with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), where he has worked for over twenty-six years. He currently holds the rank of
Captain II and is assigned as the Commanding Officer for Special Operations Division.

Alex has prior Commanding Officer experience at Olympic and Central Patrol Divisions. Within these assignments, Alex continued to promote increase community involvement and engagement within all the diverse communities of both Olympic and Central Area. Which included; Koreatown, Pico Union, Downtown LA, Skid Row and China Town areas.

As an officer with the LAPD, Alex has worked many different assignments, including patrol in Central, Van Nuys, Hollywood, 77th Street, Hollenbeck and Newton Divisions. Specialized units in Van Nuys Vice, Hollenbeck GED, Newton CLEAR and Southwest GIT. Geographic detectives in Southeast and Southwest. Internal Affairs at Valley and Central Admin Sections.

Alex has been a HAPCOA members for the past ten years and has previously held the titles of Sergeant-At-Arms, Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President. He is active within the Training, Events and Scholarship committees.
